Whatever your field of expertise, profession or trade, it is essential to maintain your expertise and knowledge of innovation and new developments. So, make Continuous Learning a part of your career plan. Spend some time each week, even if just couple of hours to go through trade news and magazines.

If you are in technology, then you can always check out our news and commentaries section to keep abreast of the latest news about innovation in technology. You can also check out this site, which is fast becoming a comprehensive IT Knowledge portal; but even in general you may want to read up on reviews and commentaries about the "latest and greatest" happening in your field of expertise and where you intend to go.

So for example, let's say you are a IT Service Delivery manager aspiring for the director position in the near future, then you should not only check out the various established as well as innovative ways to improve and enhance service quality and efficiency, but you may also want to check out some leadership books and courses that will help you to understand the subtle aspects and the fine nuances of becoming a Director. A Director is not just about managing a team but leading the team (and the organization) in a direction that is in line with Corporate Goals & Vision.

Make Continuous Improvement an essential part of your weekly work-plan and soon you will feel more empowered with latest information and renewed view-point for your work and career path.

On Becoming a Leader

Every professional works hard, constantly tries to develop their skills to climb the next step… to reach the top. But once they are there, it’s a whole different ball-game! How does one stay at the top? To be a great leader- now you are not merely excelling in your chosen field, but you also got to exhibit an organizational and social responsibility to train and mentor others. To create an ambience of growth and success.

Over the years, I have seen many professionals who did great till they simply needed to develop their work skills, but once they needed/started to lead- slowly they were slipping. Initially they were bumbling, confused supervisors without clear direction or plan and soon they turned into dreaded bosses and terrible managers! Over time, they themselves felt unhappy- as they were not experiencing the satisfaction they had once felt for years- doing what they loved!

To avoid this “promotion trap” make sure that if you are interested in climbing the organizational ladder, then you are also grooming yourself to be a good leader. Developing leadership qualities is not simply about being a supervisor or a boss and “telling others what to do and keeping a watchful eye over” … it really is about “leading”.

Leading your people and your organization so they can achieve their vision and goals. Leading your organization to innovation and responsible growth. Leading your organization to prosperity and increasing shareholder value.

Journaling your work day will generate great reference material...

3/14/2018

My clients are always amazed at how much knowledge, information and templates I have handy as ready reference material. Work-day journaling is something I have been doing for a long time. At the end of each work day, or atleast each week, I will take some time out to simply journal my work day (week). Ofcourse not client- proprietary information- but lessons, learning- what could have been done better, what were some of my key observances, how folks reacted in a scenario and what could have been done differently to achieve a better outcome.

Sometimes I would re-create a document I had made for the client or wish I did since it made sense (to me atleast); but they were not interested at that time. I try to be as impartial as possible- almost as if I was a fly on the wall, watching all these on goings and writing from the perspective of a "wise consultant". Initially ofcourse, I needed to refer to industry documents on best practices etc. but as I started growing in my career, I also started having my own reference base! It has proven priceless- time and time again.

All these learning, these valuable tidbits of information over time have created a huge content bank for me. It seems like for all main types of process, all key project methodology templates or even Continuous Improvement questionnaire sheets- you name it and I probably have something that I can easily modify and provide to a client.

This allows me to provide an extra value add to my clients. If someone had to create these documents or templates from scratch then it would take them several hours to generate it and for me it is simply a matter of tweaking a few things, customizing it to the client and viola- their scenario-specific document is done. It cuts down documentation time by almost half!

Starting today, give this a try. You will thank me and be very happy for having taken this extra time at the end of each day to recapitulate about your work life, strategize for the next day and create a memoir that you can read over the years- feeling glad for having had the grit and determination to survive those challenging clients and probably even more glad and grateful for those awesome ones who helped you to learn and grow- professionally and personally...

All true leaders are avid readers. If you want to become a leader, make it a habit to regularly read books, magazines and periodicals not just from your field of expertise but also about the world at large. Remember, business does not happen in a vacuum. Irrespective of your industry, you cannot be a good leader if you are unaware of key world political happenings and economic forecasts in addition to research and innovation in your area.Picture

When Life Gives you Lemons- ask for Salt and Tequila. Good contingency plans should be developed to explore and prepare for any eventuality. Controls that are put to avoid risks may not show immediate returns but do go a long way to increase profitability and maintain brand value.
