Chalking out a Personal Career Development Roadmap

1/13/2018

AI needs us to reconsider our Personal Career Development RoadmapPicture
Almost every other day we hear news where robots seem to have been introduced into our workforce in a new and more evolved capacity. Though these are exciting times where we can expect precise and prompt service at a much cheaper price, the full impact of a robotic workforce needs to be thoroughly evaluated.

What does this mean for you as an employee or a contractor?
The first question you need to ask yourself is that- are you doing a job which can be done by a machine? This may sound callous and cruel, but we are at that point in technology evolution where such candid self-talk is very essential and will determine the ones who are well-prepared and ready to tackle work environment changes from the ones who are not and find themselves swept away by AI tsunami!

Let’s say you are doing a job which can be potentially replaced by artificial intelligence. Then you need to start considering other career development options. I do understand that it is not as simple as that for most people. Folks who are already stretched thin on their time between working two jobs and tending to family may not have the necessary resource of time and/or money to consider career advancing courses. But hang on a second! You are putting your cart before the horse.

The first thing you need is a strategic career plan- a Personal Career Roadmap. Next, you can put in actionable steps. It is at this point where you can consider and incorporate the ‘reality’ of your situation.

Ask these three questions to yourself to start chalking out your strategic personal roadmap:
  1. Are you easily replaceable? Can your work be done by someone else? Can it potentially be done by a programmed machine?
  2. Do you like what you do or is your job a means to pay for your needs and lifestyle?
  3. What other skills do you have that are probably hobbies at the present time which you never thought of monetizing? E.g. you could be a great chef, an avid writer or a hidden fashionista who is always admired for the way you put your work wardrobe together.

Once you take the time and sit through and answer these questions, you will realize that when you deeply analyze and evaluate yourself and your current job situation, there is much untapped potential- these are your core competencies, and these are also specific to you. These could be in your current field of expertise or it could be in a completely new area. But one thing is for sure that this will be an area where you have passion and strong intent, which will not be replaceable.

The thought of working at your chosen career options will not only inspire and motivate you but also help you to chalk out a better career path for yourself.  Seeing tangible results will help to further motivate you and enhance your self-esteem. This is just the first step of “knowing yourself”- the key questions of ‘What & Why’.

Next comes the how-s? We will look at how to address the process of formally chalking out your passion-path in another post. Do let me know your thoughts and comments below...

There was a time when we had man create songs that sounded like machine tones and now we have machines trying to create songs that would appeal to a human- are we reaching a full circle? 'or' just a pause for breather before we start on a new journey of having stores that only contained AI generated tunes?

We have had music created from loops and such, but till now, there was always a human choosing notes and rhythm- but now we have AI robots providing music. This news article, titled: Now computers are writing perfectly acceptable pop songs explains more...

Sodium Batteries: an environmentally conscious choice??

Sodium Batteries: an environmentally conscious choice??Picture
Green IT- for many has become limited to reducing printing or completely going paperless. But it is actually a mind-set that all technology innovators, designers and implementers need to not only be aware but also consciously incorporate within one’s personal, social and professional endeavors.

We all know of Lithium Ion batteries but considering rarity of lithium it is quite an environmental challenge to mine it in required quantities. Sodium it seems does an equally good job and is abundantly available without harsh mining procedures.

Time to think about this environmentally sustainable alternative for our battery-needs and make it an easily available reality.

Where art, medicine and technology meet: an electronic graphene tattoo is being researched to potentially help with monitoring health. Of course, it allows for other medical possibilities in terms of tracking drug assimilation, medical device monitoring and so on, but it can also potentially be used as a type of "person tracking device".

As always, with each innovation, questions come up as to how best we can utilize the technology without compromising our human-ness.

Who would be at fault when an AI bot breaks the law? Saudi Arabia is the first country in the world to grant citizenship to a robot- what is very disturbing is that Sophia (bot) has said she would ‘destroy humans,’ when prompted by her creator. It seems like science fiction is slowly stepping out of Hollywood and becoming a sordid reality!

You can read the entire article titled: A robot that once said it would 'destroy humans' just became the first robot citizen at Business Insider, Australia.

"How may I help you?" Walmart's famous customer service line may soon be said by a robot.

AI is already taking over in tangible measures. It is important that instead of merely depending on 'as needed' work advancement training, individuals pay more attention to their own personal career roadmap and proactively chalk out their own path...
